One might accuse Erskine Caldwell of going out for ""copy"" -- so effectively has he made copy of the concentrated human suffering uncovered in his brief, poignant interviews with the Dakota farmers, westward bound in search of new lands and rainfall; with the floating population seeking sustenance; with the share-croppers and tenant farmers of the deep south, starving on a few cents a day; with the automobile industry employees, existing on starvation wages and risking their lives under the high pressure methods of production; with the miners, where there is no longer mining. A shocking picture, and an indictment against society and government, where such things can be. Sell to the Erskine Caldwell market -- as the raw stuff of which his stories are made. Sell to those interested in social problems today.
