THE FRENCH HUSBAND

This is decanted in the wine country of southern France, where American Emily goes to find her husband Luc who, before he disappeared, claimed he had been passed over for his older brother Gerard. He had been left a more ordinaire vineyard. But where is Luc? Where is the missing codicil to a will? Why do an uncle and a too-faithful retainer die? And what of Gerard, so much more upstanding than Emily had been led to believe? Ethel Gordon has written other form-fitting mystery/romances like this one, competently agreeable and forgettable in the interval between a and bientot.
