THE WORLD FROM JACKSON SQUARE

Addition to the City and Country Reader Series -- this is New Orleans. And again it bears witness to the fact that New Orleans- like Paris- supplies inspiration to all kinds of writers. Much of the material is drawn from primary sources of early explorers and travelers, memoirs dating back to 1697, letters, chronicles, historical bits from the Indian troubles of the mid 19th century, to considerable emphasis on the period of the War between the States. Trevelers,- French, English, American- have left their records, Fearon, Harriet Martineau, Lyell, Lafcadio, Hearn. Naturalists (Audubon), poets (Whitman and Sandburg), writers (Thackeray, Mark Twain, Galsworthy, Dos Passos, Sherwood Anderson, Stark Young)-some with stories, some with descriptive pieces. Lyle Saxon, George, Cable, Hamilton Basso, Oliver LaFarge- New Orleans was in their blood as in their writing. I miss Roark Bradford and today's outstanding recorder- Harnett Kane. But otherwise the roster seems generously representative of all phases.
