A chronicle novel, with a background of past generations, but with the emphasis on the modern scions of a family founded, in America, by an English blacksmith, who brought with him a bitterness and hatred of the British aristocracy which he built into his new life, and that of his descendants. There's an ironic twist to the plot, and the tables are turned when the ultimate heir to the fortune he had founded, bears the child of a member of the English family who had driven him forth from his English home. The background of an American aristocracy of wealth and position, self-made, splendidly vigorous racing scenes, complex interplay of characters make this a memorable first novel.
