KIRKUS REVIEW

For 15-year-old Kit, life on a Vermont farm with its daily dose of milking the cows is quite fine. She also loves her dance classes at the local college. Then her mother pulls her out of high school after a knifing incident and her beloved dance teacher falls ill. This opens the floodgates for mom-bashing. Kit is through with someone who is totally negative and who “sweeps life and …desires out the door.” A crisis is precipitated by the new dance teacher, who looks like Aragorn and who encourages her to apply to a dance school in Montreal, a dream her mother adamantly refuses to support. Kit is besotted and schemes to go against the wishes of her mother, who, it turns out, has had a tragic history with dead children. Then the Aragorn look-alike shows his true colors in a steamy shower scene. The coming-of-age conclusion is satisfying, and the descriptions of Kit losing herself in the music as she performs ballet steps will strike a chord with those who love dance. (Fiction. 12 & up)
