COLLECTED POEMS 1920-1954

A sure sign of Montale's centrality to modern Italian poetry is that he's attracted two accomplished translators for his most important work. Galassi, who pays homage to the English versions of Montale (d. 1981) by the late William Arrowsmith, nevertheless distinguishes his massive volume--the complete poems from the central decades of Montale's career--with his attention both to form and to the sounds of Montale's Italian. The originals, provided en face, are further supported by Galassi's helpful scholarly appartus, including notes drawn from the wealth of commentary on Italy's Nobel Prize winner (1975).
