A misguided, really quite unpleasant girl, with a not too savory picture of small town characters, in a story one can hardly like or recommend. Rosie, early in life, shows her opposition to her family and their way of life, and decides that her aim in life is respectability. In her forward march she causes her father's death, her sister's commitment to a reform school, the departure of the boy who loves her, and the hostility of her mother and other brothers and sisters. Blackmail-gossip technique and a gift with the needle gets her into many of the households, but costs her friendship with the doctor, for the time being. But it is that very doctor who eventually helps her regain a sense of value and opens her eyes to her family's worth.
