THE SEABURY COOKBOOK FOR BOYS AND GIRLS

An illustrated glossary of simple terms and tools leads off, followed by a few sensible instructions for before and after you cook -- but what particularly distinguishes this from others for beginners is that, with two exceptions, the nine recipes involve cooking not just concocting: top-burner perils are avoided by using the oven, even for hamburgers. The look is blithe, the tone light, the directions and illustrations nonetheless explicit; also, the several recipes add up to a dinner or party menu, with tips on preparation. Nothing finicky about the preparation in general -- lots of vigorous stirring and squashy molding and rolling. This first appeared in softcover as The Lucky Cook Book for Boy's and Girls; it is easily readable, totally practicable.
