At first Karl Muhlbach, that quiet little insurance man, gentle as a teddy bear and, true, as sexless, seems familiar. He. should--he's The Connoisseur (1974) who first became obsessed by antiquities when he was drawn to a Mayan figurine. Now he's attracted to something much more alive if equally equivocal--the spectacularly alluring little tramp, Lambeth, who takes him down one walk after another, spends one strenuously exhausting night with him, is here, there, everywhere (a little like Holly Golightly), even in a porno flick, before she makes her unexpected exit. Evan Connell, of course, could not write a graceless sentence and his diversion succeeds in slow-teasing and seducing the reader before disappearing altogether.
