Publisher: Doubleday

The one dark haired child in a classroom filled with blond children of American- Scandinavian heritage gets the part Elsa covets -- Snow White in the Christmas play. Then Elsa's brother is responsible for the child's loose tooth coming out- and the angry head mistress reluctantly gives Elsa the part. Tragedy- Elsa's apparently firm front teeth suddenly are loose, too, and she starves herself and hides her secret, hoping to win through the play without losing the teeth. The dentist helps- also in secret. But the apple on the night of the play itself, betrays her- and both teeth come out and the suddenly lisping heroine turns the evening into a riot of fun! An original story built around one of the highlights familiar to every youngster. In content and format the story should belong in the easy reading classification. But the vocabulary is beyond beginning readers, so use it for the third grade level.
