NEW BLUE SHOES

A combination of sharp focus and soft filter distinguishes Eva Rice's picture book projections of everyday excursions. Here Rebecca and her most understanding Mama (though today she looks more like a grandmother, with high heels, hat, fat legs and hair in a bun) go downtown to buy Rebecca some shoes. The child's little outburst demanding nice blue shoes is met with an offhand shh and then compliance, which should sit well with her peers; when she has second thoughts, Mama jokes about getting her a different pair of feet -- reassuring her later that her new shoes, her own feet and in fact ""all of you"" are just fine. This lacks the slanted, underplayed drollery that informed the ordinary in last year's Oh, Lewis! but Rebecca and her mother are a model pair.
