BOOK REVIEWING FOR AN AUDIENCE

This is sub-titled as A Practical Guide in Techniques For Lecture and Broadcast but the concentration is solely an oral book reviewing- not lecturing in general. A sound and commonsense approach, with a good introductory analysis of the function and the responsibility of the book reviewer, the basic difference between oral and written reviewing, the different kinds of oral presentation of book reviews. Brief mention is made of library reviewing -- of student book reports- of specific audiences, but the special concern is with reviewing for club groups, etc. Educational background, appreciation of the interrelation of books and the world around us, a balance between old books and new, an ability to use reference sources, review media, biographical data -- all by way of preparation, stresses the importance of rounded approach to the process of reviewing the books. Then comes the selective process- what to include and why, what to exclude, how to prepare the text (or notes) -- and how to present the material. Good advice, too, on appearance, on vocabulary, on voice and diction. The last part of the book is comprised of several scripts -- the books in every instance reasonably sure to be familiar ones. Competent, but limited.
