Even when dead, Myra, a shrike, is a possessive presence and the doubt surrounding her decease affects all who had known her; her former husband; her son; his girl, now arrested for her murder; and her boy's friend, already doomed to die; who makes an unlikely confession. The attempt- by the police and by the members of the family- to find the original owner of eight grains of morphine sustains the story long after the equally naked truth has been made known... As usual- unusual, but somehow sterile.
