THE SCHOOL BELL RINGS

Another illustrated by Sandra James who certainly has an appealing style. In twelve different stories the author shows some of the distinctive types of schools there have been in this country. There are the Boston school in 1775 when pupils and teacher helped hide the guns; Nellie Custis in 1784 learning at Mt. Vernon; a New England Dame school in 1780 where they used Hornbooks; the Walla Walla Mission school run by Marcus and Narciasa Whitman; an Indiana school in 1820 when the boys locked out the teacher on Christmas day; and other such interesting pictures of early American school life.
