A serious and conscientious scientist, a renowned German entomologist, provides a valuable informative text which lays the groundwork for better understanding of what is the main body of a beautiful book- superb photographs in full color of 200 species. Judicious selection from the astronomical number of beetles- they provide one third of the order Insecta- gives the reader- and viewer- new insight into the world of beetles. The reproductions correspond to the image as seen through 2x or 3x magnifying glass, so not only do the incredibly lovely colors and patterns appear but other physical details are visible. Form and structure, habitat and characteristics of the best known genera and species; something of their role in myth and folklore and their legal status (some are ""protected"" to insure their continuity) will add lesser known facts for the serious amateur entomologist. The study dates back to classic Greece, while the first steps of modern classification were taken by the omniscient Linnaeus. A final section gives useful advice to beginning collectors. For an easily defined market.
