THE BOOK OF AMERICAN SKIING

A fun book takes on the American ski scene with a bow to buffs of all ages. Sports Illustrated ski editor-author Bowen gives a brief history of the sport, goes on to all happy places, telling about the start of Sun Valley, Aspen, Stowe, Big Bromley, Mt. Snow, Sugarbush, etc., with a view to personalities and ambience. There are skiing instructions, pre-season exercises, in-season drinks; there is talk of racing and fashions. With its photographs, run in with the text, in full color (and not yet seen here), this is a gift book rather than a straight-faced guide. Deep powder for devotees.
