PLAYING THE RECORDERS

Although an instrument within the technical grasp of the less musically endowed, the range of proficiency on this instrument is infinite. In this brief but compact book, the author describes the various types of recorders--alto, tenor, bass, and soprano, reviews its evolution--its enormous popularity before the eighteenth century--presents a series of exercises, suggests a broad repertoire, and elaborates on certain refinements of musical ornamentation. An instrument for which a broad and interesting repertoire is available, the recorder affords the player the opportunity to engage in chamber groups without placing the stringent demands upon him which a string or reed instrument would impose. A fine guide for all those who either play or contemplate playing the English Flute.
