KIRKUS REVIEW

Any book sporting a Brian Cook jacket of Fountain Abbey with end papers of Durham and Fountain plans is bound to be off to a good start. An immensely readable book giving the history of the growth of various Christian orders in England and of their different forms of architecture. One especially fascinating chapter deals with the daily life of the members and gives vivid descriptions of pageants and feast days. The book throughout teems with photographs and sketches of the most beautiful and picturesque of the abbeys. If your customer is going to England, she should take this along because of its accurate information. If she is staying at home she should read it just for the fun of it.
