Men- women- and a horse, in a story which subdues sentiment, provides a drama which is emotional rather than strictly sporting. This is the story of Lynne and Guy just returned from the wars, and the Sailmaker, champion racer, whom they board for Alex Dunhill, whose interest in men is unselective and inclusive. Lynne, whose resentment of Alex is retroactive to her former affair with Guy, becomes increasingly uneasy as Nick Locarno, the jockey who brought fame to Sailmaker, but whom Alex had fired, haunts the stables. Gradually and accidentally, Lynne learns of the relationship between Locarno and Alex, of her attempt to bring him to heel by cutting him off from his horse, but of Locarno's ultimate victory as he is given full rights to the new champion sired by the Sailmaker.... Sex sophistication smartens a drama of pique and possession, makes it highly readable, if more at rental level than sales.
