A good yarn, told against the stormy period immediately prior to the outbreak of the American Revolution, the scene shifting from ship-building Norfolk, to beseiged Boston, to Bermuda, suffering from the British blockade and torn in loyalties, to Philadelphia and the Continental Congress in session. It is a story of three brothers, two of them sympathetic to the rebel cause, the third, interested chiefly in making a success of his own business of shipping. Well paced story, a broad -- and rather unusual canvas, good characterizations. There is perhaps a multiplicity of plots, with the overlapping stories of the three brothers, but it is well handled and good reading. A distinct contribution to American historical fiction -- for that special market.
