A journalistic approach to the drama of the Red Cross, through recounting four score and more tales of national disaster. The forest fires of Michigan in 1881 first enabled Clara Barton to organize it over here; the Johnstown flood, the Georgia tornado of 1893, cyclones, volcanic eruptions, sea disasters, the San Francisco fire, mine and factory wrecks, the Spanish flu, drought, dust storms and floods -- the Red Cross to the rescue. Nothing of the inner organization, etc. Simply a retelling of the stories of horror and death in which it functioned for good.
