ONE MORE TIME

Still those roses, silver, spacious houses; clean men, lacy women and bubbling girls -- but this time Miss Baldwin has revivified her dwindling genre by foregoing a bow-tied ending. Cynthia and Edward are separating, Edward being nudged toward divorce by careerist Lisa; Cynthia's mother Lucy, in her elegant seventies, remembering her own dewy premarital affair with her late husband, cannot condemn Vicki, her granddaughter, for planning a weekend summer with Mac. Edward's not sure he loves Lisa; Vicki's not sure the summer will last forever; Lucy's not sure she can manage old age; Cynthia's not sure she should try to hold Edward with whom she has never felt sexually compatible. So the domestic dust never really settles, like motes in a Westchester sunbeam. One more book and Ms. Baldwin's appeal still holds one more time.
