Commissioned by the Canadian Wildlife Service to study the species canis lupis, the author moved into wolf territory and became the near neighbor of a pack. After losing his initial fear, he became fond of, and found much to admire in, the maligned animals. His observations of the wolves at work, play and domestic activities led him to the conclusion that the wolf is not the merciless predator running the caribou herds but a vital segment in the balance of nature. His iciest contempt is saved for the program of strychnine poisoning of the wolves and their incredible serial roundup and butchering by the traders.
