KIRKUS REVIEW

This clever little anthology includes a number of essays that go far in explaining the unique aesthetic of Spain's premier modern poet: Garc'a Lorca's notion of ""duende"" summons an earth spirit, or demon, who unlocks the emotions and creates a lexicon of mysterious imagery for describing the heightened sense of reality experienced by dancers, ""deep song"" balladeers, and bullfighters-all of whom he discusses in separate essays here. A bilingual selection of his poems (translated by Merwin, Spender, Honig, and others) further explores the confrontation with death that is at the heart of Garc'a Lorca's folk credo, and also serves as a splendid introduction for first-time readers.
