KIRKUS REVIEW

By rescuing a young duck from an oil slick and taking him home as a pet, a lonely old fish packer named Tom Codley opens his life, surprised at how interesting it has suddenly become. For the first time he experiences an actual conversation with Whippersnapper, his young co-worker, receives a visit from widowed Mrs. Primrose downstairs who knows an incredible number of songs about ducks, and joins her and Ducky Dear in an outing in Hyde Park where Mrs. P. pursues her musical career. And by the time that Ducky flies off at last Tom is already well on the way to weding Mrs. Primrose and choosing Whippersnapper as best man. Neither Tom nor his story will bowl anyone over but both are disarmingly humble and quietly nice.
