An odd book, a rather telling picture of post-war directionless circles here and on the continent, occasionally poignant, with a certain strong emotional undertow. The story of a girl left unstable, rootless, romantic at eighteen, with a background of the decadence of Austrian aristocracy, following the war, and New York, hard, brittle, evasive. Her marriage falls to give her what she needs -- she turns back to the Old World, only to find further disappointment. Eventually, left alone, she discovers that inner peace can come only through personal integration, not places or people. A psychological novel, which should find a market among those who like emotional fiction handled imaginatively.
