A slightly mad collection of inter-related stories of Spanish people, wherein the characters sometimes seem to run away with the author. Ever so slightly reminiscent of the atmosphere of Tortilla Flat, though less direct and simple. Here you see begging in the glory of an art; the Spanish attitude towards death; the power of gossip; fanatical loyalty towards an idea, and so on, as presented by recurring groups of characters. In spite of meanderings, it is diverting reading -- a book for the ""something different"" audience. A first -- and original -- piece of work.
