ADVENTURES IN PUBLIC SERVICE

Winners of the Rockefeller Public Service Awards, these eight men were dramatic witness to the fact that there are countless dedicated men and women serving in government posts who place the excitement and challenge of public responsibility shead of wealth and renown. Deep concern for the image of the United States Foreign service and Civil Service inspired John D. Rockefeller III to launch these awards; Congress passed the Government Employee Training Act -- but even now the opportunities are not fully known, nor the performance fully recognized. The eight men chosen from the many are good examples:- Sterling B. Hendricks, plant scientist; Llewellyn S. Thompson, diplomat; Hugh L. Dryden, who implements the National Aeronautics and Space act; Colin F. Stam, a key factor in tax legislation: Thomas B. Nolan of the U. S. Geological Survey; Robert H. Felix, head of the National Institute of Mental Health; Robert M. Ball, who has seen Social Security grow from a small bureau to a vast institution affecting the lives of all Americans; Richard McArdle, chief of the U.S. Forest Service. Their biographers are drawn from writers, editors, reporters, science writers, foreign correspondents, etc. while the editors themselves combine civil service experience with free lance writing and editing. Here is a composite portrait of public service which should interest young people in particular, and to this end there is a postscript for those who might qualify for opportunities in federal service, foreign service, or some of the myriad areas the government encompasses.
