Being a fulsome compendium of observations, mostly disenchanted and dyspeptic"" about politics, ""the art of the next best""--Russell Baker--back to the early Greeks who had more than a few well chosen words about it, along with some opening and closing comments by the editor. Actually most of them are extremely diverting (whether it's Ogden Nash's ""Democrats are to the manna born"" or Mark Twain's ""Reader, suppose you were an idiot; and suppose you were a member of Congress; but I repeat myself"") and--for the season of campaign pennants and promises, a fine antidote.
