SEBASTIAN AND THE MUSHROOM by Fernando Krahn

Despite its tiny size this wordless dream takes us through some mind-expanding changes as little Sebastian, picking mushrooms in the woods, is invited inside a giant mushroom/observatory, goes for a ride in a motorized star to a planet of giant mushrooms with human faces and, when one of the mushrooms takes a bite out of the star, falls through space and. . . right back into his own bed. The bedtime reverie is a felicitous framework, softening and containing Krahn's quirky sense of continuity, and the company of Krahn's alter ego Sebastian (see his Journeys. . . , 1968) gives the adventure more bite than other silent outings.
