As introduced by Bronislaw Malinowski, this is certainly a ""wealth of sober scientific labor and searching social analysis"", in which the political, historical, economic, social significance of sugar and tobacco, the Cuban counterpoint, is analyzed in a series of papers. Sugar and tobacco formed Cuba's history, were the motives of its leaders, the shackles of its leaders, the shackles of its people. This studies their cultivation and production, their racial connections and social consequences, their transportation and trade, their ethnography and ""transculturation"" abroad through the centuries, the customs and rituals, religious and mystical attitudes associated with the devil weed, the beginnings of sugar production in America and its close connection with capitalism, etc. A book of sociological as well as industrial importance, but only for scientific shelves.
