A fast-paced adventure story for boys, set in the wilderness of the North Woods. Young Clint Wede is fascinated with wild-life photography, and he and his friend Trapper Bill are spending their vacation with the pursuit of that hobby in mind. But nature, in the form of a forest fire, and humanity, in the form of Phil Ambers, interfere with their plans. Phil whose ""tenderfoot"" habits causes Clint endless annoyance, proves himself a heroic and useful friend when the two boys bravely meet the problems of rescue and escape on the blazing mountain. In their new found friendship, Clint realizes that ""a fellow needs people just as he needs the forests, the streams and the wild creatures"". Tension mounts steadily before the outbreak of fire and rain is felt as a wonderful relief. Character development is sketchy in a well-built plot.
