A sort of Union Square of the South (South Carolina) --current unrest in the mill town of Dunmow, where the workers are descended from first settlers who take their religion more than seriously, to the point of confusing issues. The negro problem -- strikes -- violence against violence -- the forces of tradition against the mind of coming youth -- and the interwoven lives of the townspeople as background. An intellectual -- sociological novel, rather than entertainment. The character of Ishma, introduced in Call Home the Heart, is again a figure of deep significance, symbol of the strength of the mountains.
