THE FOLK ARTS AND CRAFTS OF NEW ENGLAND

An attractive look at the arts and crafts that flourished in New England from the time of the Puritans with their, yes, love of color, through the nineteenth century. The authors brighten their account with quotes from craftsmen, women and children and pertinent biographies. They range from toys to tombstones as they discuss handweaving, embroidery, samplers, crewel work and needlepoint; woodcarving (ship figureheads, decoys, etc.), candlemaking, pottery work, silver and tinsmithing, silhouettes and portrait painting and painting on glass, glassmaking, quilting, tavern and trade signs, jewelry and basket-making.
