Another in the series of pictorial biographies utilizing the superb photographs of Leonard VonMatt. These have included the lives of Pope Pius X, St. Francis of Assisi and St. Ignatius of Loyola. This volume contains 183 photographic plates and a narration relating to Bernadette Soubirous, the saint of the apparitions at Lourdes. The book is attractively bound and printed. The style of the narrative is simple and smooth-flowing. Only the essentials of the saint's life are recorded, neither sketchily nor too much in detail. The excellent photographs appropriately interspersed in groups throughout the narrative depict persons, places and things associated with the life of St. Bernadette and with the shrine of the Blessed Virgin Mary at Lourdes. They serve to illustrate the narrative and to reflect the authentic physical background of the saint's life. The book should have an appeal to many Catholics because of the popularity of both Bernadette and Lourdes. It should also appeal to those who relish artistic photographs of French life and scenery.
