Mother leaves for Europe, to take Father's place, and the children transport themselves to Nantucket for the summer where the girls acquire beaux and all help to run the house: the return to the Montolair madhouse is marked by Mother's school and the inroads its publicity made on private life: Mother behaves most unusually when she has to have a nose operation: a vegetable garden provides the ""sport"" of collecting fertilizer: a summer beau is routed: Mother and her lecturing and teaching bring fame to the family while Mother on the platform at the children's schools brings shame to them: they meet the Hoovers and Mother becomes a Girl Scout: there are marriages and the youngest girl is coached into being a stagline favorite: there is a gathering of the lan for the baptism of grandchildren.
