PENNY FOR LUCK

Pub Date: Aug. 27th, 1935
Publisher: Houghton, Mifflin

Going on 14 and large for her age, orphaned Penny runs away from the Home, and is picked up by the Smith family and helps them to the way of small expense and a summer that is profitable from all angles. They set up housekeeping in a deserted house in one of the ghost towns of the mining district of Colorado, and pan for gold with sufficient result to buy a house in near-by Central City. But Penny is summoned back to the confines of the Home, and only by a break of luck -- and daring -- does she turn adventure to her own ends, and becomes a real part of the Smith family. This is a better story than A Bowlful of Stars.
