Florence Crannell Means, author of other stories about Negro students, Shuttered Windows and Great Day in the Morning, sets a college love story with the Negroes of a higher economic strata against the background of Fisk University in Tennessee. Toni Deval, daughter of a Denver druggist, abandons plans to attend the University of Denver when Fred Fenton, a rising young Negro violinist terminates their romance which had lasted for more than a year. His prosperity and social standing made him seem desirable to Toni, but on the campus she finds a new set of values. Peter, a young man preparing for the ministry takes Ferd's place and she resolves to enter the field of social welfare. A sympathetic projection of the snubs, social distinctions and glimmering hopes of young Negroes today.
