Bringing the romantic mystery novel up to date, Miss Randall does a competent job in creating an atmosphere of tension and suspense as she maneuvers her young heroine through this Cheshire chess game. Meredith is hired as a summer companion to a disturbed eight-year-old whose mother has apparently committed suicide. She soon finds herself involved in the odd emotional entanglements surrounding the rest of the family which seem to stem from this event...and a missing suicide note. Love, passion, dishonor, surprise...the traditional adjectives fit and this should find its way to the heart of an older feminine audience.
