Biography of the man who was foremost in creating the era of Mississippi steamboating, an energetic, relentlessly persistent, ambitious water pioneer. Another source aspect of regional-background import, adequately and authentically surveyed and portrayed -- but not the sort of book that will catch the imagination of the inland waterway enthusiast. His life was full of interest, -- early years of fur trading, sailing the Ohio in a keelboat; then with the coming of steam, a mounting ambition to conquer the Mississippi and his achievement of his goal, against odds; closing years with farming and railroading occupying his attention. Not particularly compelling in handling.
