SOMEBODY ELSE'S SHOES

There's magic here, too, but if you can accept the symbol of Evalina's stepping into other people's shoes, on a visit to the cobbler's, and of this making her magically the person in whose shoes she stands -- you'll find this, on all other counts, a full-bodied story of an American town and what people are really like behind their facades. A Portuguese family is newly come to this little harbor town not too long ago; Evalina finds that the little foreigners are much nicer than the spoiled, wealthy brat, who accuses them of stealing. She finds out who is democratic and American; who are snobs. There's a picnic- and a meadow bull-fight.
