A story of divided loyalties at the time of the American Revolution, as young Elizabeth Brandon, daughter of an Englishman, Advocate of the Crown in Massachusetts, and of a Connecticut mother, finds herself torn between two viewpoints. A visit to England had made her unhappy over the bickerings of the ungrateful colonies and out of sympathy with even her English father's opposition to the Crown. He is recalled to England and Elizabeth stays with her grandfather, a staunch old settler of Connecticut. Her grandmother's gift to her of a field of flax helps give her a feeling of belonging, and vivid, personable people, romance, a spinning contest and much excellent detail make this a fresh fund of source material, and a reaffirmation of the main concepts on which this country was founded.
