BEAR TEETH FOR COURAGE

By

Publisher: Van Nostrand

In the 1670's, the Linni Lenape Indians of New Jersey were under attack by the Mohawks; during the same decade, English Quakers settled in the region. The friendships of Circling Hawk, a young Lenape, and John, a Quaker, is indicative of the peace which existed between Indians and Friends. The events in young Circling Hawk's life as a novice-hunter consist of standard Indian scenes and situations presented in an uninspired style (e.g. hearing typical tales from his grandfather, hunting game in the forest, etc.). The Indians speak in monotonously choppy sentences -- a point which the author seems to stress in an effort to characterize Indians. Regional appeal will probably be slight, since little information is included about the conditions of the land and settlers, except for obvious commentary on the Quakers.
