The story is set in Spain at the end of the First Century AD when Roman slaves are building bridges, aqueducts and roads. The central character, a patrician-born slave, Gaus Juue Laer, supervises the bridge over the Tagus and yearns for freedom. A lush and complex story in which Caius becomes involved in machinations concerning guerrilla chieftains and helps save Spain for Rome conveys much of an area and period rarely portrayed.
