A simple story of a Chinese riverboat family centers on its young son, Wong Ting, who wishes to walk on the land. With the river Wu near the city of Min as their home, Wong Ting and his family fish from their junk as their ancestors did before them but it is Wong Ting alone who wishes what is almost sacrilege- to go ashore. At a wharf-side puppet show, he makes a friend, Kind Lady, and is granted his wish later when he finds a valuable bracelet for her- but not before he has had his adventures with pirates, a lost baby, a lost anchor and the other problems of their life.
