First person views of sixth century Ireland--an unlikely prospect executed without a spark of life. First Yseult tells her story, which begins with the death of her mother and continues in funereal tones except when Cormac the Outlaw rides in and rescues her from Venn, a transparent villain. Her chieftain father's second wife is something like a witch but even she and her half-wild brothor don't really pep things up. Blaina is the younger sister, in love with Jan whose misty past (royal blood?) must be searched out across the seas for his rightful throne to be restored. Neither girl has much to offer a reader except for some anachronous observations.
