KIRKUS REVIEW

Frances Cavanah chooses what she considers the most essential highlights of ""our country's story"" to provide beginning readers with an overview of American history before they take the deep plunge. National heroes like Columbus, John Smith, Washington, Daniel Boons, Lincoln, Bell, Edison; outstanding events, such as the Revolutionary War, westward expansion, the first railroad, the Civil War, the immigration waves, each are given a page or two of consise description. Though the explanations are clear and the language appropriate we wonder if second and third graders are capable of absorbing such diversified material in one fell swoop.
