Still another contribution for this season to the newly popularized delight of reading aloud. And- in selecting the material for this collection, Frances Cavanah has chosen with the idea of all ages getting together in this enriching act of sharing. She has chosen some extracts- complete in themselves- from longer books, by Eleanor Estes, Carol Brink, Laura Ingalls Wilder, Mark Twain, Louisa Alcott- extracts that may well take young listeners to the books themselves. She's picked bits of adventure from Armstrong Sperry, Esther Forbes, Elizabeth Enright, Howard Pyle. Hugh Lofting, Rudyard Kipling-short stories or episodes from longer ones- again tempting introductions. Fairy tales for the youngest members of the family, poetry for all ages, fables and allegories. myths and legends, folk tales and nonsense- a varied offering. And at the close, there are passages from the Bible, prayers, and sections from our national heritage that round out a good collection with some basic inspirational writings. This is perhaps a less original collection than the one above- A Golden Land- but it has a wider reach.
