PENNY AND THE WHITE HORSE

Oh dear, oh dear, we don't like it -- any of us. And yet we hear the advance has been very good and it is a Junior Guild choice -- so apparently some people like it. One youngster commented, ""What's wrong with my eyes? It looks as though neon lights had been played on the pictures!"" The pictures -- to my way of thinking -- should be more realistic, less sophisticated, to go with the story. Perhaps they are meant to convey a dream quality -- I'd call it a nightmare. Penny was virtually obsessed by a white horse on a tinpanny merry-go-round, and when she came back from her holiday to find a modernistic creation in its place, she had the same sinking feeling in her tummy that I had when I saw this much tooted book.
