Gothic with a new wing not always in accord, this follows the tremulous-to-""all shook up"" experiences of Beth, a very ""sensible"" girl to begin with, who takes a position with the Earl of Monksford whose stately home is being converted to ""char parties and ice cream stalls."" It's also full of assorted relatives down to his greatnephew Hector, a pop music idol about to crack -- up, and a young man with whom she falls in love by design -- his. And eyes that follow her and a ghost and an ""accident"" before she discovers she's really the Earl's granddaughter and heiress even if she loses perhaps more than she gains. . . . As indicated -- something old, something new, something borrowed -- for the approximate once ten thousand who read in this genre.
